The concept and practice of self-care is not a new thing. For counselors and people in helping roles it is an essential skill to increase our effectiveness to those we are helping and interacting with in and outside of work. When work or life in general is a little more difficult to navigate, self-care habits should kick in. Yet, it is in these seasons of grasping for air that we are completely unaware of what we need to take care of ourselves.
I was at dance fitness tonight getting completely lost in the music and movement (I am not a dancer, just a lover of dance) and it dawned on me that I had been neglecting the things in my life that keep me grounded. It is just as important to practice self-care even if we don't think we need it! I figured I should document this epiphany as well as jot down some notes on quick and helpful self-care ideas for anyone else who may need a reminder. Let's call them the 4 P's!
Let's commit to doing something to take care of ourselves this week and weekend!

- Play - Doing things that involve using your body or mind in way that is playful and fun! This could include exercise, walks during your lunch break, games, sports, drawing, painting, etc.
- Pause - Doing things that allow your brain to rest such as prayer, meditation, yoga, mindfulness, and sleep!
- Passion - Doing things that you really care about - volunteer work, religion
- Pamper - Doing things to treat yo' self. Although be careful of this one as it can have a financial impact and shouldn't be the only type of self-care. This could include a massage, bath or hot shower, mani/pedi (guys can do this too), buying your favorite coffee, etc.
