Two years ago I was vulnerable, but excited! I was new to Ann Arbor and new to the University of Michigan and ready to pivot my profession into the world of student development and higher ed. Before accepting my first job at the Ford School I had several information interviews with professionals across the university; many of them told me I would struggle to find an advising position with only my masters and background in counseling.
Luckily, one of my informational interviews was with Lauren (now one of my very best friends) who encouraged me to not listen to the "you can't/you won't." I am so thankful for Lauren, RJ, my family, and the many others who encouraged me those first months. I am especially thankful for my first boss at the Ford School who always kept my professional dreams in the forefront of her mind -- she really supported me and provided me with opportunities that got me to where I am today.

Fast forward two years later and here I sit. I am an academic advisor at an amazing school and I get to interact with brilliant students, colleagues, and faculty. I have an office where ah-ha moments are had, goals are developed, laughter is shared, and sometimes tears are shed. It is a beautiful, crazy, exciting, challenging, and rewarding career.
I am reading the book The Appreciate Advising Revolution, and something they shared that really resonated with me: " Every day, academic advisors pay homage to all of the people who assisted them throughout their lives. The advisor gets paid to pay it forward everyday!"
Since I am in the month of my two years with the University and about to welcome 230 students back into my office in the next few weeks, I can't help but reflect on where I have been, who I am now as an advisor, and where this profession will lead me. I am looking forward to paying it forward this year and learning from my students. And, I am feeling so grateful for my role and the life I have been given.
